Boots that are too tight restrict blood flow
to the feet. On cold days, wear a pair that’s
big enough to accommodate two pairs of
socks and still allow wiggle room for toes.
Boots lined with sheepskin, felt, or
Thinsulate are the warmest.

The shelter
on your back
Teach your kids this life-
saving lesson from a hardcore
outdoorsman, Tom Brown III,
head instructor of Tom Brown
Jr.’s Tracker School in
Waretown, New Jersey. If
they ever find themselves lost
or without shelter on a cold
day, and they get to the point
where their teeth are chatter-
ing, tell them to stuff dry leaf
litter between their jacket and
their inner clothes. "Your
clothes become your shelter,”
says Brown.

These two areas are the
first place you lose
circulation. Consider
them the canary in the
cold mine. If they get
chilled, the rest of you
isn’t far behind. So always
keep a knit hat in your
coat or purse and a scarf
to pull up over your nose.

Mittens are better
than gloves because
they allow your fingers
to share warmth.
Wearing a pair that’s
both waterproof and
windproof over thin
knitted ones is best. Or,
slip a disposable hand
warmer into each mitten.
If your hands start feeling
tingly or numb, pull your
arms inside your jacket
and stick your hands
under your arms.
